Gus Heldt will be presenting a paper on the one surviving reference to "ship songs" (funa uta) from the tenth-century Tosa Diary as part of a panel he organized for the Annual AAS meeting for 2017 in Toronto on popular song from the Heian Period (794-1185) entitled "Between Court Texts and Commoner Voices: Social and Performative Aspects of Heian Song"
