About
The Department of East Asian Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Virginia is home to an internationally recognized faculty whose research and teaching encompasses all historical periods of the region, as well as rigorous language instruction from elementary to advanced levels in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. In addition to language courses, we offer a wide array of electives in English on East Asian literature and culture teaching such subjects as classical poetry, early myths, detective mysteries, and contemporary cinema, among others. The department offers a B.A. in Chinese Language and Literatures and one in Japanese Language and Literature. Through our affiliation with the East Asia Center, we also partner with faculty in Anthropology, Architecture, Art, History, Economics, Politics, and Religious Studies to provide a minor, a B.A., and an M.A. in East Asian Studies.
