CHIN4559 - PROFESSIONAL CHINESE WITH INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Meeting times: Tuesday/Thursday, 9:30-10:45 AM

Instructor: Shu-Chen Chen

Prerequisite: successful completion of CHIN4020 or equivalent.

This course will consist of five themes in the following order: The Meaning of Work, Job Searching, Mock Job Interviews, and Handling On-The-Job Challenges, , and Work-Life Balance.  We will interview five international guest speakers on these topics who will then further contribute to the learning process by assigning students relevant classwork and projects.  Assignments will include related reading/listening materials, presentations, role plays and essay writing.   Students will describe, narrate, compare, explain, and handle complicated situations by using the linguistic functions of supporting opinions, discussing abstract concepts, and hypothesizing.  Students will learn how to perform in linguistically unfamiliar situations while using newly-acquired vocabulary, idioms and grammatical structures. This course’s learning goal is for students to reach, at a minimum, the "Advanced Low level" for all four skills as per the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
