The first Mandarin Chinese Jumpstart short course has ended successfully. Ms. Jie YUAN, the 2012-13 part-time visiting instructor from East China Normal University taught this mini course from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on February 23 and March 2 at the International Center. Most of the participants were UVA faculty/staff, community members, and a few were undergraduate and graduate students. All the participants enjoyed the brief introduction to the pinyin system, basic greetings and the phrases for giving a self-introduction. Popular topics, such as Chinese cuisine and the Spring festival were introduced as well. The participants expressed their interest in taking advantage of opportunities for continuing their Chinese study. The program is hoping to have more sessions, and some of the participants are giving serious consideration to continuing to learn mandarin.
