KOR 1010 Elementary Korean (4) (Y)

KOR 1010 is the first half of the beginning level Korean, and is designed for those who have no prior knowledge in Korean. This course aims to train students to perform appropriate spoken and written communication in most essential daily life situations. This course will focus on mastering the writing system, correct pronunciation, and basic vocabulary and grammar used in carrying out simple real-life tasks; students will learn how to speak, understand, read, and write short sentences and paragraphs on concrete and familiar topics such as identity, school and classes, daily activities, past experiences and future plans. This course will also introduce Korean culture essentials for a better understanding of the Korean language.

KOR 1020 Elementary Korean (4) (Y)

Korean 1020 is the Elementary Korean language course designed for those who have taken Korean 1010 or had some knowledge in Korean. Students in this class learn basic yet comprehensive grammar to build standard Korean language skills in writing, listening, reading, and speaking. Upon the completion of the class, students will be able to read and write short Korean paragraphs and be able to carry simple yet proper conversations in everyday life situations. This course will also introduce Korean culture essentials for a better understanding of the Korean language.

KOR 2010 Intermediate Korean (4) (Y)

Korean 2010 is the first part of intermediate Korean. It is catered to learners who are committed to further expanding their language skills based on the contents covered in Korean 1010 & 1020. The objective of this course is to equip students with skills in speaking, writing, listening, and reading at the intermediate level. The four skills will be equally emphasized throughout this section. Aspects of Korean culture and history will also be covered using diverse materials. The instructor will help students to build a solid foundation for further and independent study in Korean. The course will serve as a bridge class to KOR 2020.

KOR 2020 Intermediate Korean (4) (Y)

Korean 2020 is the second part of Intermediate Korean and a continuation of Intermediate Korean 2010. The objective of this course is to equip students with skills in speaking, writing, listening, and reading at the intermediate level in Korean. The four skills will be equally emphasized throughout this section. This intermediate course deals with more than one-page long conversations and paragraph-level narrative text. Aspects of Korean culture and history will also be covered using diverse materials. The instructor will help students to build a solid foundation for further and independent study in Korean.

KOR 3010 Advanced Korean (3) (Y)

KOR 3010 is the first half of Third-Year Korean (Advanced Intermediate). This course is designed for learners who have taken the second half of intermediate Korean (KOR 2020), or have an equivalent background in Korean language and culture. Thus, the medium of instruction will be in Korean. The students in this course will explore various topics in Korean and further improve their skills in listening, reading, speaking, and writing in Korean to enable them to better comprehend Korean culture and society. The goal of this course, through continuous discussion and composition, is that students will communicate their knowledge of Korean history and society with confidence. Building up professional vocabulary and enhancing both speaking and writing skills will be the essence of this course. Students will gain profound knowledge in various fields of Korean studies such as current issues in Korean society, the way Korean people think, tradition, history, and culture through discussion and composition.  The instructor will help students to build a solid foundation for further and independent study in Korean. The course will serve as a bridge class to KOR 3020.

KOR 4010 Advanced Readings in Modern Korean (3) (Y)

KOR 4010 is designed for undergraduate and graduate students who have successfully completed KOR 3020 or its equivalent. The class is designed for students who would like to enhance their proficiency in reading and writing advanced Korean texts. A wide variety of interesting, informative, authentic, and culturally significant reading material is provided to help students achieve high levels of proficiency not only in interpersonal but also in interpretive and presentational communication. The students in this course will further improve their skills in Korean language and will improve command over sociolinguistics. The course will serve as a bridge class to KOR 4020.

KOR 4020 Advanced Readings in Modern Korean (3) (Y)

KOR 4020 is the second half of the Fourth-Year Korean. This course is designed for learners who have taken the first half of the Fourth-Year Korean (KOR 4010), or have equivalent background in Korean language and culture. This course aims to help students develop advanced-level communicative competence, with special focus on enhancing their reading comprehension, essay writing, and discourse (discussion and presentation) skills, in addition to acquiring new words and expressions. The course is built upon the Content-based Instruction model. Reading materials (both main text and related readings drawn from a variety of sources) on various topics and issues pertaining to Korean society and culture will be used in order to enhance students' cultural understanding while facilitating their linguistic competence through various tasks and activities.
