Bringing Language to Life: Fall Events in the Department

On October 29, the Japanese Program held its annual Japanese Program Fair, drawing about 60 students from the first-, second-, and third-year classes. Dr. Jack Chen opened the fair by celebrating students’ progress and encouraging them to explore the program’s many pathways. Instructors introduced current and upcoming courses, and several students shared personal stories—ranging from study abroad experiences to opportunities like working as a teaching assistant or participating in the J-Live Talk contest. The fair ended with small-group conversations where upper-level students answered questions about advanced courses, study strategies, and planning for study abroad.

The following day, the Chinese Program hosted a lively event highlighting student experience in Chinese language and culture. After opening remarks from Dr. Chen, students presented reflections on their coursework, cultural activities, and study abroad programs. Media teams from the Cavalier Daily and Asian Kwik documented the afternoon, capturing photos and video for future features. Chinese food sponsored by DEALIC and IWL was served during the second half, creating a warm space for students and guests to connect.

Together, these two events showcased the enthusiasm, diversity, and community spirit within the East Asian Languages Department, giving students meaningful opportunities to celebrate their progress and engage more deeply with Japanese and Chinese language learning.
