The Department is pleased to announce the Monaghan and Gray Scholarship recipients for East Asian Language Studies Abroad. Now in its fourth year, this scholarship was previously known solely as the Monaghan Scholarship. However, thanks to the generous support of Mr. Gray this year, it has been renamed to honor both contributors.
We are thrilled to share that the following five students, listed in alphabetical order, have been awarded the Monaghan and Gray Scholarship, each receiving $1,250:
1. Chen, Kiyomi
Kiyomi is a rising third-year student and will be studying Chinese this summer within the UVA-in-Shanghai Program.
2. Huo, Emily
Emily is a rising second-year student and will be studying Chinese this summer within the UVA-in-Shanghai Program.
3. Le, Khoa
Khoa is a rising fourth-year student and will be studying Chinese this summer within the UVA-in-Shanghai Program.
4. Lim, Stephanie
Stephanie is a rising third-year student and will be studying Japanese at Hitotsubashi University during Fall 2025.
5. Lin, Tim
Tim is a rising second-year student and will be studying Chinese this summer within the UVA-in-Shanghai Program.
This year’s applicants were an outstanding group—driven students ready to explore language and culture in East Asia. Choosing finalists was incredibly difficult. If you weren’t selected, thank you for applying. Don’t lose heart—keep pursuing global experiences. Study abroad is always worth it.
As Chair of the Selection Committee, I also want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our committee members, Ying Gao and Yoko Hasegawa, for their thoughtful and thorough evaluation of the candidates.
Warmest congratulations to our Monaghan and Gray Scholarship awardees—we wish you all the best in your upcoming adventures abroad!
