Based on Shu-Chen's significant contributions towards greater understanding and appreciation of Asian culture or Asian-American relations, she was selected for the AAPI Advancement Award.
It is an outstanding achievement -- Chen Laoshi will receive a Jefferson Cup and the department will get $5,000!
Please read below Shu-Shen's nomination from one of her former students:
"I am pleased to nominate Ms. Shu-chen Chen for the AAPI Advancement Award based on her extensive involvement in Chinese language instruction at the University, including being the Director of Chinese Summer Language Institute throughout the years, as well as through innovative courses like CHIN 4801 Professional Chinese with Community Engagement and CHTR 2800 Chinese Calligraphy. The former course allows Chinese language students to engage with the broader Chinese-speaking community at the University while the latter has served as a gateway for students at the University, especially those not studying Chinese, to learn more about Chinese calligraphy and culture. Shu-chen Chen also often applies for grants that allows for her to interact with students outside of the classroom, including inviting them to meals to enjoy traditional Chinese foods such as dumplings. I believe that the AAPI Advancement Award will recognize her countless contributions to the Department of East Asian Languages, Literature, and Culture and to the University community."
