EAST2559 UNLOCKING THE TREASURE BOX OF CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY

This new course will serve students with or without Chinese language background to understand, experience, and reap the multi-fold benefits of practicing Chinese calligraphy. Students will 1) gain knowledge of the evolution of Chinese characters and calligraphy styles; 2) understand the connection between Chinese calligraphy and the deeper cultural and philosophical meanings it represents; 3) analyze and critique the aesthetics of Chinese calligraphy; 4) develop brushwork techniques in two or more of the six major calligraphy scripts (i.e., oracle-bone, small seal, clerical, regular, running, and cursive) to create meaningful calligraphy artworks in its complete form independently; and 5) experience the writing of calligraphy as a mindfulness practice of peace and nourishment.
