The IWL inaugural symposium was successfully concluded at the Ballroom in Newcomb Hall on October 31st, 2013. It featured speeches on “Nations as Networks: Foreign Language Study in the Post-Davos Age” by Michael Geisler and “Language Curricular Developments Through the United States Government: Context and Content” by Scott McGinnis. The two keynote speeches were sandwiched by two roundtable discussions with UVa faculty who used languages other than English in their research and teaching. The IWL kickoff event attracted over 1,000 people. Miao-Fen Tseng intensively worked behind the scenes with the IWL steering committee to make the event possible. She has co-chaired the committee with the Associate Dean of the Humanities and Arts, Professor Cristina Della Coletta, since spring 2013.
